Two Inescapable Appointments! This is a KJV Bible study guide!Introduction: Most of us live in a world that consists of various appointments. Some are good about keeping appointments; other tend to forget them. Hebrews 9:27 advances two appointments set by God for man. No one, regardless of what they believe, misses either one of these appointments. The verse reads, "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:" Let us briefly analyze the appointments of Hebrews 9:27.I. "It is appointed unto men once to die…."A. Physical death is the result of the sin of Adam (Genesis 2:17).B. If the Lord does not first return, all men shall experience the appointment of death.a. Death (thanatos) is the separation of the body and the spirit (James 2:26). Definition of death follows: Death, (thanatos), properly, the death of our flesh body, i. e. that separation (whether natural or violent) of the soul from the body by which the life on earth is ended.b. Notice, the writer said "once to die." Once (hapax) means "one time" (Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words). The notion often advanced by re-incarnation of multiple births and deaths is false.II. "…but after this the judgment."A. The scriptures teach all men shall be present at the judgment (Acts 17: 30-31, Romans 14:12, 2 Corinthians 5:10).B. All men will be divided into two groups, the saved and the lost (Matthew 25:31-46).C. Jesus himself shall be the judge (2 Corinthians 5:10).D. We shall be judged based on our deeds (Romans 2:6, 2 Corinthians 5:10).E. The words of Jesus, his teaching, shall be the standard by which you and I shall be judged.a. Jesus said, "…the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day" (John 12:48).b. There should be no dread for the righteous (I John 4:17). However, the wicked have much to dread (Revelation 20:11-15).Conclusion: It seems to be the trend today to miss appointments. However, we will not be able to cancel death and the judgment. You and I will absolutely be present for man's ultimate appointment - the judgment. The sensible thing is to make ourselves ready for these appointments. The inspired apostle Paul wrote, "Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men…" (2 Corinthians 5:11). Let us be persuaded now because later will be too late. How Can You Be Ready? You alone can choose your future. The only way to prepare to meet God is to obey His command to repent (turn from your way and go God’s way) and to receive Christ as your personal Lord and Savior. Isaiah 55:7 says, “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.” Romans 10:9 and 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved…For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”To be absent from this flesh body [upon death], the spirit is present with the Lord. Ecclesiastes 12:6 [This is describing when our flesh body dies].Ecclesiastes 12:7 [Our flesh body goes back to dust, and the spirit goes back to God who gave it. Also, see John 3:5 (bag of waters, woman's womb)].2 Corinthians 5:6-8 [When we are absent from this body, we are present with the Lord].
